What Is Stacks (STX)? Bitcoin Layer, sBTC and Stacking Risks

Stacks (STX) appeared in OrangeX's Top Gainers card on October 1, 2026. At 10:22 Beijing time, the verified STX/USDT spot page showed 0.3746 USDT, a 24-hour change of +19.45%, 6.3M STX in volume and 2.26M USDT in turnover. This is a dated market snapshot, not evidence of what caused the gain or a forecast of future prices.

What problem does Stacks solve?

Bitcoin is designed to protect and transfer BTC, but its base layer has limited support for complex applications. Stacks is a Bitcoin layer that adds smart contracts, decentralized applications and programmable assets without changing Bitcoin itself. Its official introduction says Stacks blocks are anchored to Bitcoin and its Nakamoto upgrade shortened block times while adding Bitcoin finality.

Stacks uses the Clarity smart-contract language and its own execution environment. Applications run on Stacks rather than inside Bitcoin's base-layer script system. Anchoring does not make every application risk-free: smart contracts, wallets, bridges and applications still have their own failure modes.

How do STX and sBTC differ?

STX is the native asset of the Stacks network. It pays transaction fees and supports network incentives. sBTC serves a different role. The official sBTC FAQ describes it as a programmable, non-custodial asset backed 1:1 by BTC, designed to move Bitcoin value into and out of Bitcoin layers.

This distinction prevents a common misunderstanding: STX is not intended to track Bitcoin's price one-for-one. sBTC represents locked BTC on Stacks, while STX has its own supply, market price and network utility. Users should also distinguish sBTC from BTC held directly on the Bitcoin base layer.

What is STX used for?

STX has several connected functions:

  • paying fees for transactions and smart-contract activity;
  • supporting incentives for Stacks block production and network signers;
  • being locked in Stacking to participate in consensus-related duties; and
  • serving as economic capacity in parts of the Stacks and sBTC design.

The project's explanation of why STX is needed connects the token to incentives for decentralized block production and peg signers. Network utility can create demand for STX, but it does not guarantee that token demand or price will rise.

What is Stacking, and is it the same as staking?

Stacking means locking STX for defined reward cycles and participating directly or through a pool. Stacks' documentation says Stackers support the network as consensus-critical signers and may receive BTC rewards under Proof of Transfer.

The word resembles staking, but Stacks uses its own Proof of Transfer design. Rewards depend on protocol rules, participation method, cycle timing and pool terms. They are not interest guaranteed by holding STX. Locking, custody, smart-contract, pool and operational risks must be reviewed before participating.

What are the main Stacks and STX risks?

STX is volatile and can move independently of BTC. Stacks competes with other Bitcoin layers and smart-contract platforms, so developer activity and real user demand matter. If applications or sBTC adoption disappoint, expected network effects may not materialize.

sBTC introduces peg and signer risks in addition to normal smart-contract and bridge risks. Congestion, wallet incompatibility or contract mistakes can affect users even when Bitcoin itself continues operating normally. The security of an anchored layer is not identical to holding BTC on Bitcoin L1.

How can you buy STX on OrangeX?

The verified OrangeX STX/USDT spot market offers Limit and Market order tabs. A basic process is:

  1. Open the STX/USDT spot page and confirm the symbol and market type.
  2. Review the live price, spread, order book, 24-hour volume and fees.
  3. Choose a limit order for a chosen price or a market order for execution against available liquidity.
  4. Enter the amount, check the estimated total and confirm the filled quantity after execution.

The market values above may be outdated when you read this. Spot availability does not confirm support for every STX deposit or withdrawal network. Check the current asset page and network options before transferring funds. This article is educational information, not investment advice or a promise of returns.
