MetaMask will focus on consumers as protocols and institutional operations move into a new company. The firm says users need take no action.

Key Takeaways

  • MetaMask will focus on consumers, while a new Consensys will take on protocols and institutional infrastructure.
  • The company says users’ apps, assets, keys and access are unchanged, with no action required.

Details

Consensys Software Inc. announced on September 9, 2026, that it plans to separate its consumer business from its protocols and institutional blockchain infrastructure operations, with completion expected by the end of 2026. The existing company will be renamed MetaMask; a newly formed company will use the Consensys name, according to the company announcement.

An official FAQ published the same day says the companies began operating independently on September 9, although the separation remains to be completed. Work on Linea, Besu and Teku will sit within the new Consensys. MetaMask’s developer tools will continue as before.

The announcement gave no initial public offering (IPO) timetable. CoinDesk reported that the company had not responded to questions about its IPO plans at the time of its report.

Market Analysis

The split continues MetaMask’s expansion from a wallet into consumer financial services. According to the company’s September 9 announcement, MetaMask is expanding into payments, savings and investing, while Money Account already combines earning, spending and trading in a single balance.

The new Consensys will focus on banks, asset managers and payment providers, supplying blockchain infrastructure for tokenization, stablecoins and settlement. Each company will develop its operating model and investment strategy around its own customer base.
