Ether Liquidations Reach $356M as Crypto Wipeout Tops $1.19B
Crypto liquidations reached an estimated $1.19 billion in 24 hours, with Ether positions absorbing more losses than Bitcoin positions.
An estimated $1.19 billion in leveraged crypto positions was liquidated in 24 hours, including about $356 million tied to Ether and $298 million to Bitcoin.
Leveraged crypto markets recorded an estimated $1.19 billion in liquidations over 24 hours on October 9, with long positions accounting for more than $1 billion of the total. Ether-linked positions absorbed about $356 million, while Bitcoin positions accounted for roughly $298 million. The figures are third-party market estimates that can change as exchanges report or revise data. Confirmed market developments are tracked through the OrangeX.com news hub.
Why Ether took a larger hit
Ether fell more than 3% toward $2,490 during the measured period, while Bitcoin declined about 1% before recovering toward $82,200. Because Ether's market value was less than one-fifth of Bitcoin's, its liquidation burden was unusually large relative to its size. The estimate equated to about $1.2 million of liquidations per $1 billion of Ether market value, versus roughly $180,000 for Bitcoin.
Liquidations occur when losses reduce a leveraged position's collateral below an exchange's maintenance requirement. The venue then closes some or all of the position. When many long positions are concentrated near similar price levels, forced selling can accelerate a decline and trigger additional closures. Macro pressure met crowded leverage
The selloff followed a week in which Bitcoin repeatedly traded between roughly $83,000 and $87,000, encouraging traders to build leveraged positions inside a narrow range. Once the lower boundary failed, those positions became vulnerable to a cascade. Other estimated liquidations included about $71 million in Solana positions, $34 million in XRP and $25 million in NEAR.
The move coincided with higher oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's September meeting. The minutes showed the policy rate had been raised by 25 basis points to a 3.75%–4.00% range and described persistent inflation and rising Treasury yields. These events formed the market backdrop, but public data do not prove that any single headline caused the liquidation wave.
What traders should monitor
The first question is whether open interest rebuilds quickly after the reset. Rapid leverage growth without stronger spot demand can recreate fragile conditions. Funding rates, the gap between perpetual and spot prices, and clusters of open positions near recent lows can provide additional context, but none predicts the next move on its own.
Risk controls matter more when volatility rises. Position size, liquidation price, maintenance margin and stop conditions should be checked before an order is placed. OrangeX.com explains contract layout, margin modes and order types in its perpetual trading guide. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and a rebound after a liquidation wave does not guarantee that the market has stabilized.
OrangeX.com Analysis
The key signal is the imbalance between Ether and Bitcoin liquidations. Ether suffered a larger dollar loss despite a much smaller market value, showing that leverage concentration can matter more than headline size during a fast move. The $1.19 billion total is substantial, yet it is a rolling estimate rather than a final audited number.
The next confirmation points are sustained spot buying, calmer funding, lower open interest and whether Bitcoin can hold above the area where the cascade began. Until those signals align, the recovery should be treated as a reduction in forced selling rather than proof of a durable trend reversal.
