IEX Sets Crypto ETF Options Rules With 1 Million-Contract IBIT Limit
An SEC-published IEX filing creates listing standards for crypto trust options and sets a 1 million-contract position and exercise limit for IBIT options.
Investors Exchange has established rules for listing options on exchange-traded trusts holding one or several crypto assets, while setting a 1 million-contract position and exercise limit for options on the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission published the immediately effective filing, SR-IEX-2026-34, on October 2, 2026.
The filing aligns IEX Options with standards already used by other U.S. options exchanges. It does not approve a new crypto fund or guarantee that every crypto-linked product will receive options trading. Instead, it defines when an eligible commodity-based trust may support listed options on IEX and how large IBIT options positions may become.
What the listing standards require
Under the rule, a trust holding a single crypto asset or multiple crypto assets must first satisfy the generic criteria of its primary U.S. listing market. Each underlying crypto asset must also have maintained an average daily global market value of at least $700 million over the preceding 12 months.
In addition, each crypto asset must underlie a derivatives contract traded on a market covered by a comprehensive surveillance-sharing agreement, either directly with IEX or through common membership in the Intermarket Surveillance Group. These conditions connect product eligibility to market size and regulatory information sharing rather than to token popularity alone.

Why the IBIT limit rises to 1 million contracts
IEX set both the position limit and exercise limit for IBIT options at 1 million contracts, compared with the 250,000-contract threshold that would otherwise apply under the exchange's general criteria. Position limits restrict how many contracts an investor or coordinated group may control on the same side of the market, while exercise limits restrict how many may be exercised within the applicable period.
The filing cites IBIT's scale and liquidity. As of September 18, 2026, it reported a market capitalization of about $63.7 billion and average daily volume of about 46.4 million shares over the previous six months. IEX said a larger limit could support liquidity and hedging while remaining consistent with limits used by other exchanges.
Oversight remains part of the structure. Large options positions remain subject to reporting, including the existing 200-contract reporting threshold for a customer in a single class. IEX also said automated surveillance would monitor unusual activity in the options and underlying securities.

OrangeX.com Analysis
The rule change expands market infrastructure rather than the underlying supply of crypto ETFs. Its practical effect is to give IEX a standardized route for listing eligible crypto-trust options and a position-limit framework that matches competing venues.
The 1 million-contract ceiling may improve hedging capacity and competition, but it also concentrates attention on surveillance, margin discipline and cross-market reporting. The key evidence to watch is whether liquidity spreads across venues without weakening monitoring of large or coordinated positions. The filing is a rules framework, not a forecast of trading volume or investor demand.
